This article discusses Robert Blake and Jane Mouton's Managerial grid theory. The article explains that this theory is a model that determines the actions of management and leadership styles. Blake and Mouton intended to apply the ideas of behavioral scientists, such as Rensis Likert in management practices. They are based on research conducted at Ohio State University and the University of Michigan in 1940, which attempted to define the behavioral characteristics of successful leaders. Blake and Mouton has identified two fundamental drivers of managerial behavior, as concern about getting work, and caring about people doing the work. They argued that, on the one hand, the exclusive concern for production at the expense of the needs of those engaged in production leads to dissatisfaction and conflict, thereby adversely affecting performance, but that, on the other hand, excessive concern to avoid conflict and maintain good relations and are detrimental to the goals and objectives.
Blake and Mouton theory revolved around the comparison between the obligations of the manager the employee should be against the production company. Successful style of management may include work and workers efficiently, while less productive styles focus too much on one or the other, and in some cases, too (Allport, 1937).
