Introduction

Robert K. Merton was born on July 4th, 1910. He was a renowned and the most influential American sociologist. He was a University Professor at the Columbia University and spent most of his life teaching there. In 1994, he was given the National Medal of Science in recognition of his services to the field of sociology. Merton gained fame as a sociologist of science, and began exploring how the scientists and sociologists behave and what it is that intimidates, rewards and motivates them.
