ABSTRACT
The research aims identifying various strategic management techniques which could be adopted for better and effective management and implementation National Health Institutions in South Africa. This research explores the phenomena of strategic management along with how strategic management approach can be helpful in implementing healthcare system effectively. Literature review provides an overview about the concept of Universal Coverage - healthcare system in South African context. Furthermore, it gives an overview of National Health Insurance system which is helpful in identifying its implementation in South Africa. In the current scenario, these objectives and goals are not met effectively by National Healthcare System. The public sector, comprising of a major portion i.e. 65% is good in accessibility but low at quality. On the other hand, the private sector, which comprises of 35 percent, has high quality but less accessibility. This uneven proportionality creates problems in providing healthcare services to all the citizens at an equal level. The study also provides an overview of healthcare systems being implemented in different countries. Through secondary research method, the study provides an analysis of the Proposed National Healthcare Insurance system, identifying the benefits of the system from South African perspective and challenges that will be faced by the government while implementing the NHI as universal coverage system. Furthermore, this study has also analysed examples of different developing, developed and international experiences for identifying different strategies that could be used in effective implementation of NHI in South Africa. Lastly, the research provides the strategic approach issues that need to be addressed before NHI could be implemented in the country.
