CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

Research Background

National Healthcare Insurance is a very dynamic and complex in managerial terms. The nature of these institutions requires effective leadership and management, along with effective coordination and supervision of employees. Healthcare organisations are established for achieving certain purpose and objectives which are beyond the capability and capacity of any individual. In all the healthcare institutions, the complexity and scope of activities performed require intense coordination, linking a number of specialized disciplines and areas which should work together flawlessly for successful strategic management (Zeffane & McLoughlin, 2006, 618). For proper management of these organisations, the managers need to ascertain that all the tasks are performed at their best for achieving the organisational goals and resources, which include funds and human capital. This requires firms to understand the importance of strategic management of resources as well as departments.

Strategic management in non-profit or not-for profit organisations is observed to challenging due to the lack of clarity with respect to its implementation and understanding (Ford, Boss, Angermeier, Townson, & Jennings, 2004, 22). The service organisations, specifically healthcare organisations and institutions exist in an environment with varied regulations, facing rapid change and imminent healthcare reforms. A number of healthcare institutions do not even try to face the challenges and problems and take physicians inputs by engaging them into strategic planning. Most importantly healthcare organisations/ institutions, specifically at the national level, have been facing a number of issues in successfully implementing strategic management. In order to strategically manage the performance of the entire organisation and successfully achieve the goals, institutions needs to enhance their strategic planning. It has been observed that strategic planning has not been answered properly by the leaders of these national healthcare institutions.

This research will focus on studying the issues faced by National Health Insurance of South Africa with respect to its management in order to make available equal healthcare services to all the citizens. Furthermore, the research focuses on indentifying different strategic management techniques which should be adopted by National Health Insurance in South Africa for better implementation and management.

Research Aim and Objectives

The research aim will be to identify various strategic management techniques which could be adopted for better and effective management and implementation of National Health Institutions in South Africa. Following objectives will be helpful in achieving the main aim for this dissertation:
