Abstract

This research is intended to examine the psychological and biological behaviors which lead a person towards committing a crime. This study is conducted through providing the brief account of criminological theories and their understandings. For this purpose, the recent case of shooting rampage at the movie theater of the Aurora, Colorado has been analyzed. The findings of the study indicate that the suspect was found to be mentally ill and this mental disorder lead him towards killing the innocent people in the movie theater.

Introduction

A deadly incident happened in Aurora, Colorado on July 20, 2012 in the movie theater at the screening of Batman Movie, The Dark Knight Rises. Where a black-clad gunman appeared in the theater, who was wearing armored clothes and a gas mask and allegedly opened the canister of tear gas and then started to fire on the people randomly. Twelve people were dead on the spot while fifty eight got badly injured. This is the worst shooting rampages throughout the history of United States. The suspect then caught in a parking lot at the theater. He was 24 years old boy. His name was James Eagan Holmes.

According to the sources, James Holmes was one of the most brilliant students of the college. His class fellows also reported that he was really smart student. James Holmes was found to be a Ph.D. student of neuroscience at the University of Colorado in Aurora. According to the investigation, it was revealed that the month before the violent rampage, Holmes failed his graduate school oral boards. He then voluntarily withdrew from this graduate program. The investigation revealed that Holmes had no records of any criminal activities. He was originally from San Diego. He shifted to Colorado for continuing his study in the neuroscience in 2011 at the University of Colorado. He was enrolled in the course of Neurological Disorders and the Biological Basis of Psychiatric. According to the university record, he was the top performer and the out shine student of the university. Even his former university chancellor of University of California reported that he academically distinguished himself from the other students in his four years of honors program. He used to take an active part in his education and was found to be bringing the great level of intellectual in the class.

Problem Statement

This study has been conducted to analyze the behavior of criminals which convince them to commit the social crimes. This study intends to provide the in depth knowledge about the incident happened in the shooting at the movie theater in Colorado through describing the theories on the criminology.
