Biographical information

Mary Shelley, Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin, was born on 30 August 1797 in Somers Town, a suburb of London, and died on 1 February 1851 in Belgravia (London), is a woman of letters English, novelist, short-story writer, playwright, essayist, biographer and author of travel books (Oates, 1987).

The "historical" status

Mary Wollstonecraft died of puerperal fever eleven days after the birth of the child, and Godwin is left alone to raise Mary and her half-sister, Fanny Imlay, born out of wedlock from the union of Mary Wollstonecraft with the speculator Gilbert Imlay. One year after the death of his wife, Godwin makes him sincere tribute by publishing memoirs of the author of Vindication of the Rights of Women (1798). These memories will cause a scandal by revealing the connections of Mary Wollstonecraft and her illegitimate child.
