The Role of Supervisors

Introduction

In any organization the top management has the responsible of setting the organizational goals and policies. Through the comprehensive process of obtaining, deploying and utilizing the resources available to the organization; managers set about on achieving organizational objectives. The managers must also keep in mind that the organizational success is directly dependent on the efficiency displayed in the use of resources and the effectiveness of their activities in achieving the organizational goals. These goals are formed after a rigorous analysis of the business environment and along with the strengths and opportunities present for the organization. Hence the task of the managers is to strategize the general direction of the organization, after a comprehensive analysis.

Managers utilize majority of their time in the process of planning, organizing, staffing, leading and controlling the tasks of the organizational employees and other resources. A significant characteristic of the managerial process; is that the manager only directs the work of other employees, rather than performing the tasks himself. Hence the essential responsibility of the manager is to assign and direct the work of others and focus on the Macro level organizational objectives; whereas the role of the supervisors is to ensure the adequate implementation of the goals, which are set by the managers.

The supervisors represent the essential link between the employees and the managers within an organization. It is the role of the supervisors to understand the objectives set by the managers, and work with the employees in order to achieve the goals. Hence it can be stated that the success of the organizational goals set by the management is dependent on the organizational supervisors. The organizational goals will only be achieved if the employees within the organization adequately understand the objectives, and are given a comprehensive action plan, to achieve the organizational objectives.

Supervisors have a direct impact on the success of the organizational goals, as they form a critical link of communication between the employees and the managers.

Role of Supervisors

In any organization, the supervisor takes on several roles at one time. To completely understand the significance of the supervisory roles on the employees, one must understand the influence of the supervisors on the employee career development. The fact is that the supervisor must adopt several roles simultaneously in order to effectively help the employees achieve the organizational goals set by the management.

An effective supervisor understands the significance of coaching the employees, in order to achieve the organization goals. The supervisor must first understand the goals set by the top management, and the specific objectives the management is striving to achieve. Than the supervisor must critically analyze the relevant skill sets and the capabilities of the employees, and seek a feasible fit between the organizational goals and the employees' capabilities. Hence the organizational goals set by the management, must be then transformed into achievable action plans for the employees.
