The Role of NSA

Introduction

The terrorist attacks that took place on September 11, on the Twin Towers in America; drastically changed the dynamics of the global security measures. The incident can be highlighted as one of the most significant terrorist attacks on the developed countries in modern history. There are several global implications of the September 11 attacks, which have caused the forces of the developed countries to join together and wage war on the terrorist sources. Post 9 11, majority of the developed countries have realized that they are all vulnerable to the terrorist groups that exist in the world. These terrorist organizations, contrary to popular belief, are very well organized and financially capable. These groups have access to the resources to launch a large scale attack on numerous sensitive western targets.

The biggest line of defense that the western countries have against the hidden terrorist groups is the intelligence network (Brooks et Al, 2010). These countries have to develop the adequate information and intelligence sharing networks, which can adequate, highlight any terrorist activity on an immediate basis. The National Security Agency is the regulatory entity in the United States of America, which highlights any potential terrorist threats present on the national scale. Since the potential terrorist threat is always very high and the terrorist incident can occur at any point, these agencies have to develop a versatile role. There are several crucial activities and tasks that the NSA has to perform in order to ensure that the terrorism related threats are minimized, and the counter terrorist actions cab be implemented. The counter terrorism initiatives are only possible, if the relevant information regarding the terrorism sources is present, and can be utilized to launch a substantial counter attack.

The Primary role of NSA

The NSA is the primary national intelligence sharing agency present in the United States of America. As the security threat in the country has risen in the recent past, the relevance of the NSA has enhanced. The primary objective of NSA is to monitor communication links on a global scale, the collection and decoding of data and developing a database of relevant information on a national and international level. The agency is also provided with the responsibility of highlighting any potential threat on the national basis, in the form of terrorist insurgents. In this perspective the NSA constantly monitors the information regarding the overall population residing in the country, and highlights any possible security threats. The agency is provided with the authority to proceed with its operations on a clandestine basis, using the adequate software and technological tools (Falk & Morgenstern, 2009). This authority ensures that the NSA can effectively intercept any terrorism related communication sources, and use this information to identify the source of the threats. The agency also has to closely monitor the activities of primary the terrorist suspects residing in the country, and ensure that they are not able to organize a massive terrorist activity.
