Introduction

Free media are transforming societies by highlighting the process of decision making and enabling individuals to take control of their destinies. In this context, freedom of the media plays a crucial role in the transformation of society by redefining its political, economic and social. This is why UNESCO promotes freedom of the media, as a specialized agency of the United Nations with a mandate focused on the defence and promotion of freedom of expression and its corollary, freedom of the press (Walker, 2002, pp. 101-121).

It is a fact that innovations in communication technologies have created a translational, and even global, public sphere. As national opposition movements can link easily with a global network of supporters and journalists, it has become increasingly difficult for political leaders of autocratic regimes to control political opposition and change. However, it has to be kept in mind that dictatorships cannot be brought down by the media alone. According to Olson (2006), they are just one factor that contributes to the erosion of autocratic rule and can only unfold their potential impact in conjunction with favourable political, social, and international constellations (Olson, 2006, 439-441).

Significance of the study

Our societies are changing due to the introduction of the Internet, social networks change the way you interact with people and how to meet new people.
