David Herbert Richards Lawrence was an English writer, author of novels, short stories, poems, plays, essays, travel books, paintings, translations and literary criticism (Lawrence, 2002).
His literature presents a wide reflection on the dehumanizing effects of modernity and industrialization, addressing issues related to emotional health, vitality, spontaneity, human sexuality and instinct. Lawrence's views on all these issues caused his various personal problems as well as an order of official persecution. His work was repeatedly the subject of censorship, on the other hand, the biased interpretation of the same throughout the second half of his life was constant. As a result, he had to spend most of his life in voluntary exile, which he called "savage pilgrimage (Lawrence, 2002)."
Discussion
DH Lawrence was born on September 11, 1885 in Eastwood (Nottinghamshire). He was the fourth son of Arthur John Lawrence, a barely literate miner, and Lydia Beardsall, a former teacher, and loving woman of culture. David's mother played a significant role in developing interest in him about painting and reading. The disparity in social rank of their parents was a recurrent theme in his works (Roberts, 2001).
His homosexual inclination is reinforced by the belief that he always kept the eternal war between men and women. For Lawrence, the woman exerted a positive influence on any man, who managed to destroy his personality and hoard their freedom. This apparent male domination over what is what, according to the author, threatened the integrity of man and his masculinity (Roberts, 2001).
