The Reality of War

History has given birth to characters that have made an everlasting impact on the culture, we are pursuing today. The leaders of war history have fought for pride, culture and honor. The writer of the poem Stephen Crane “War is kind” considers that there is a double standard prevailing in the society there are people fighting in wars and on the other hand people are taught that killing is not a virtuous act. At the end of the poem the poet has left his point of view that the war is irrational and confusing. The poet considers it ridiculous that people are killing each other (Stephen, p.20). The writer are expressing different forms of death wars, both thepoet are emphasizing on different thought process Crane is states that death in war is meaning less whereas Dylan that death without putting up a fight is useless.

It is a very harsh and critical poem; the poet seems to a have pessimistic viewpoint as compared to any other poem he has written on life and this is the only poem that represents the pessimistic outlook. The poem is based on the pattern that consists of satirical statement which is repeated after every stanza “War is Kind”. When the writer states that there is a glory flying above them that is unexplainable, the statement has strong impact. The poet is questioning whether the destruction and death is actually worth loss of lives or not. This question has a significant importance as there are a lot of wars in which the reason is different as to what is portrayed (Stephen, p.20). . There are some exceptional cases as well, if we consider the World War II it was initiated to fight against the holocaust, or maybe the Civil War could be considered to be initiated for ending slavery, but then the main aim of the wars is to overcome cultural conflicts, to gain natural resources and to settle the cultural values disagreements. According to the poet, the emotions associated with the war are just to justify personal action and have sense of satisfaction in long term, people associate war with glory, nationalism and patriotism (Stephen, p.20).

Crane has set a question in this poem, whether a war is beneficial for anyone or not as the poet doesn't agree to it. The poet has used wit and criticism to express his hatred towards the destructions caused by war in his entire poem. It has been clearly mentioned by the poet in a powerful way that the war does not bring along any glory and honor, it hold no significance to people who lose their loved one especially parent who lose their son, wife losing a husband and a child who loses his father.
