The Raven

The Raven (The Raven in English) is the most famous poetic work of Edgar Allan Poe. It was written in 1845. The poet describes the anguish that it causes the death of his beloved. That anxiety is embodied a black crow, after being questioned, answered again and again: Never again, "Nevermore."

His intention was to attract both critics and satisfy popular demand. The poem is partly inspired by the novel Barnaby Rudge by Charles Dickens, where a talking raven appeared. Poe borrows the complex rhythm and meter of the poem by Elizabeth Barrett Browning called the Court of Lady Geraldine (Lady Geraldine's Courtship). The poem uses internal rhymes, and much alliteration (Granger, 13).
