The importance of social and emotional competence for successful career development and forming strong relationships in later stages of life cannot be denied. The National Research Council emphasizes upon the importance of providing love and care through nurturing relationships that helps in the child's social and emotional enhancement. “The foundations of social competence that are developed in the first five years are linked to emotional well-being and affect a child's later ability to functionally adapt in school and to form successful relationships throughout life (National Scientific Council on the Developing Child, 2004).” It is very important to introduce such activities and exercises in early stages of childhood so that he can deal with the challenges of adolescence and adulthood with confidence and strong personality both emotionally and physically. Social Development helps the child to learn skills, knowledge and values to contribute positively towards the society (Commonwealth of Australia, 2009).The pyramid model provides important interventions and steps involved in developing children's social, behavioural, emotional well being and competence. It is a tiered and structured framework that provides evidence based methodology for developing the above mentioned qualities from a very early stage of childhood. (Fox et al., 2003, pp. 48; Hemmeter, Ostrosky, & Fox, 2006, pp.583) it has been designed for children facing different issues and challenges can also be applied to every type of children regardless of his cultural and ethnic background. The article covers and an investigative study on children and provide proof that pyramid children show improvement in terms of social and physical interaction when educated in relation to the Pyramid Model.
Summary
The Pyramid Model
The earlier Pyramid model suggested intervention strategies for children belonging to the age group of 2 to 5 years, but some modifications have been made to it. Hunter suggests that according to the latest changes made in the model, it can be applied to infants and preschoolers. There is a detailed framework and guidelines presented to deal with issues of infants and young children. Problems of children who are at the risk of developing social and emotional issues can be addressed from the very early year of infant development (Hunter & Hemmeter, 2009, pp.5)
