The psychological impact of child verbal abuse or maltreatment
The psychological impact of child verbal abuse or maltreatment
Literature review
Investigations on family relations indicate an association between conflicts and the presence of adversity in the family context with implications for the psychological development of children and adolescents. This paper aims to review some important theoretical contributions on the subject, including some results of research on the impact of family conflicts and maltreatment on the psychological development of children and adolescents. It addresses the theoretical and practical implications for research in psychology.
When the first child comes into this world, the child learns to interact and operate with its environment. When a baby cries, the mother tends to her needs, providing support and comfort. Baby learns of his mother as if both their physical and emotional needs met. When a baby's needs are not met or are met with hostility and violence, his reaction to the world shapes your perception. Abuse and neglect have negative effects on child development, physical, social and emotional effects. These children are more likely to suffer from depression, anxiety, drug abuse and other maladaptive behaviors. Parental neglect and abuse hurts children and can have long term implications. Child abuse and child neglect can prevent healthy growth and development of children. The first type, physical abuse, is an attempt to control the child's behavior. In the case of parents inflict physical abuse in children, exceeds the level of social acceptability where he leaves a wounded child with welts, burns on his body or broken limbs. Usually this type of physical abuse does not happen alone, but occurs with other forms of maltreatment.
Although more difficult to detect in children, this form of abuse may provide negative childhood experiences that later impacts the mental health of these children and can use in dysfunctional behaviors. Emotional abuse can be seen as insults said by the father of the child or withholding affection. Negligence is not to predict the basic needs of a child as she leaves the damaged or endangered child. This form of abuse can lead to difficulties with attachment and disturbed relationships with other individuals.
Studies on family processes indicate that the quality of the parental relationship and the presence of discord in the family environment are factors associated with the etiology of emotional disturbance in children and adolescents (Cummings & Davies, 2002; Wamboldt & Wamboldt, 2000). First, we identify a general association between family discord and child adjustment difficulties, considering that the situations of conflict in the family resulted in a change in parenting practices that, in turn, impeded the development of the child. Subsequently, it was found that certain characteristics of conflict were directly related to the development of children. Moreover, the effects of marital conflict were mainly determined by the exposure of the child/adolescent to episodes of family discord and not only a change in educational practices by parents.
