Introduction “The Overcoat” by Nikolai Gogol is about Akakii Akakievich and his simple work of copying papers for a department. Akakii led a very simple life and not many people would talk to him or even give him much interest. Though, his life changes when he buy a new overcoat. This overcoat gave Akakii the enthusiasm and confidence he wanted to get out into the world (Gogol, 23).

"The Overcoat" talks about the story of Akaky Akakyevich, a poor government clerk who survives a simple life. He took great satisfaction in making copies of documents. He kept himself separated, because it was what he was used to all his life, and separated because no one else wanted to be around him (Gogol, pp.23). He was the hardest worker in the office and the others liked to divert his concentration from his work. They particularly enjoyed making fun of his overcoat, which was not much more than clothes over his back. One day he understands that his winter overcoat has turn out to be used up. He put up with it to the tailor for repair but is told that it cannot be mending and that he will have to purchase a new one. Akaky experience severe deprivation in order to save money for a new overcoat. In the procedure, the coat starts to take an essential role in his life and he start to view the garment is the main element to his happiness. After Akaky Akakievich saves up enough money, he goes and purchases his new overcoat. He is so proud of it, as he should be (Gogol, pp.23). He carries himself as a whole new person.
