Introduction

In 1965, S. E. Hinton wrote this novel “The Outsiders”. At that time, it was one of the hit novels and was very popular in teen agers. After back to back flop movies, Francis Ford Coppola made “The Outsiders” in 1983. With this movie he gained a legendary status in Hollywood, and gained his fan base on a large scale. The cast and crew of this movie included Matt Dillon, Tom Cruise, Ralph Macchio, Emilio Estevez, C. Thomas Howell, Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe, Glenn Withrow, Darren Dalton, Diane Lane, Leif Garrett, and Michelle Meyrink. This movie was nominated for four “Young Artist Awards” in 1978 by “Young Artist Foundation”. C. Thomas Howell won the award for "Best Young Picture Actor". Diane Lane was the nominee for "Best Young Supporting Actress ". The film was the nominee for "Best Family picture", and Francis Ford Coppola was the nominee for Golden prize award. The director of this movie was Francis Ford Coppola. Producer was Gray Frederickson and Fred Roos and screen writer was Kathleen Rowell. This film cost $10 Million to produce.

Main Idea

The story and its movie revolve around the life style comparison between a rich and working class teenage society. In this movie, the director portrays their way of living, different psyches of these two societies and the mental level of each character. It raises the issue and problems which teenagers face, and their adaptations of bad habits like smoking, drinking and gang violence. This movie openly discusses the slang lifestyle of teen gangs and its effects on their lives.

Summary

This movie starts with the life sketch of two teenage gangs, live in Tulsa. On an underdeveloped side of town, a gang of the working class, black shirts wearing “greasers”. A group of wealthy, nose-poking “Socs” with their inherited money and luxurious cars, always hassle with greasers and are the villain side of this movie. The movie particularly revolves around greasers and especially around a thirteen year old, delicate boy Ponboy Curtis (C. Thomas Howell)”. He is an orphan who lives with his two elder brothers, Sodapop (Rob Lowe) and Darrell (Patrick Swayze). In the same tumbledown house, Tom Cruise and Emilio Estevez also live. Their friend Dally Winston (Matt Dillon) released from jail recently. Ponboy also has one of his best friends named Johnny (Ralph Macchio), an innocent touchy kid from a troubled family, also provides many emotional scenes in this movie.

The story stars with Ponyboy as he's returning back to home, after watching the movie alone. On his way to home, Socs attacked him in the vacant lot just little far from his home. Luckily his brothers and the rest of the crew rescue him and chase away the Socs. Next night Pony, Johnny and Dallas went to watch the movie. Here, they saw two Socials girls are watching the movie too. Dallas began to harass the girls, but Johnny prevented him to do so, but still Dallas did and left.
