Initially therefore, the social dimension of sustainable development is clearly identifiable: the pursuit of sustainable development requires a social system capable of finding solutions to the tensions arising from unbalanced development. Sustainable development implies a concern for social equity between generations, a concern which must be extended, logically, within the same generation.
But in the reality of everyday social sphere of sustainable development is often caught between the ecocentric approach aiming at the protection of all living beings and the human-centered approach aimed exclusively material welfare of man. Moreover, the harmony between human beings can quickly turn into access to basic needs and the social dimension seems so engulfed in the hodgepodge of environmental protection and economic development.
In addition to the neo-liberal environmentalists, we must acknowledge that few would recognize the social sphere as structuring the triptych of sustainable development. Integrated into the environment for some, part of the economy for the other, the social dimension of sustainable development is mainstreamed in a pincer movement and only rarely the subject of heated debate between environmentalists and economists.
