The Modernist Manifesto

The Spirit of the New

Being a professor in architecture in Melbourne University, Australia, I have made an extensive research in the field of art and designs. I am greatly inspired by the phenomenal contribution by Modernists designers of Australia in the field of the art, architecture, fashion, film and interior designing.

I fully support the Modernists Movement as I believe that a change adds life and richness to the cultural heritage. The world war II has just ended and many influential artists and architects are looking forward to adopt new technology of the twentieth century in their work this will bring inventiveness and innovation in their traditional bring. Artists from Europe, America, and Russia are focusing on experimenting new trends in techniques in their work.

Australia too is no more different. The fabulous work of some modern Australian artists is being appreciated and they are getting recognition worldwide. Some early Modernists designers in Australia include Dahl and Geoffrey Collings, Gert Selheim, Richard Haughton James, Norman Seabrook, Roy Grounds, Best Overend, and Fred Ward. Inspired by the work of early designers, we see some followers today, like Robin Boyd, Harry Seidler, Grant Featherstone and others (Goad, 2004).

The basic aim of this manifesto is to give complete information about international developments in Modernists designs. The Modernist Movement was promoted by some pioneer modernists from 1919 to 1939. The Depression of the 1930s and the events after World War II make the base to bring in change in Australian art and architecture. To understand the revolution made by Modernists Movement, it is pertinent to shed some light on the Depression of the 1930s.

In 1930, the industrial countries had to bear great economic slouch. It mainly hit Europe, North America and other industrialized countries till the end of 1939. The Great Depression had a negative impact on Australian economy too. Poverty increased and the unemployment rate rose to the alarming situation. Australian government made compensation for its economy through sports and managed to stabilize its falling financial state. Art and architecture could not exempt itself from the harmful effects of the depression. After the recession, designers and artists thought to bring some changes in their field (Cravens, 2009).

The modernist's movement started after 1929 and gained its popularity after the World War II. Every form art took a new turn. The movement generally refers to the style and techniques with simplicity at the turn of the twentieth century. It also aimed at the reconciliation of the principles of art and architecture with the fast advancement of technology and society. Many new schools of designs and styles of architecture were formulated which completely changed the face of the world. The modernist movement produced various artists whose work was recognized all over the world.
