Introduction

The Lady with the Dog is a story created by Anton Chekhov, first published in December 1899. It tells the adulterous affair between a Russian banker and a woman whom he met in Yalta. The story divides into four parts: the first describes the initial meeting in Yalta; the second relates to the consummation of the affair, the third banker talks about the return of his visit to Moscow and the people of the woman, finally the fourth describes the visit of women to Moscow (Pitcher, 1979).

The Story Background

Anton Chekhov's short story that was entitled as “The Lady with the Dog” is the love story between the two major characters Anna Sergeyevna and Dmitry Gurov. It is a fact that the writer tries to show the struggle that they experience as they prevent their affair from happening, especially since they were already married and their won respective families to live with.

The play was written in the city of Yalta where Chekhov lived at the request of your doctor's advice due to advanced tuberculosis. It was first published in December 1899 in the journal Russian Thought (Russkaya Mysl) under the subtitle "A History" (Rasskaz). It has since been included in several collections and considered as one of the best-known stories of Chekhov.

The Lady with the Dog is one of the most beautiful and artistically accomplished prose works of Chekhov. The story begins abruptly and ends open, with a hopeful look Gurov and Anna in the future.
