Introduction

'The Journey of the Magi' is an uncomplicated and tightly packed story that is particularly the use of symbolism and allusion of TS Eliot. The poem puts up with echoes of the authors who have influenced the spiritual journey of Eliot. Lancelot Andrewes is the most notable author amongst the influential. The opening of the poem is with a quote that was borrowed from Nativity sermon of Lancelot Andrewes, discoursed in Jacobean court in 1622. Eliot has admired the intellectual achievement of Andrewes as he has pointed his skills to grasp both emotional sensibility and intellectual idea in his leadership and harmony in church of 17th century. It seemed that Andrewes has validated the membership of church for Eliot at the very moment when he had been considering his own initiation in church.

The poem creates more curiosity and interest by its biblical symbolism which has created complex pattern that is strengthened in second stanza as the approach of Magi to Bethlehem and the Christ birth. The use of biblical symbolism seems to be justifying just like the whole journey to accomplishment.

Moreover, the steam provides energy to the mill that gives the impression to take away the dark, which gives another suggestion to claim of Jesus as the Light of the World (John 8:12).
