The Internet

Introduction

We are now living in the age of the Internet: a fast-paced and dense medium crowded with thorough information and inaccuracies all at the same time. In this age, we are more connected to the world than ever before and yet emotionally disconnected from one another. In this essay, we review the benefits and disadvantages of this modern media and look at ways to become a successful Internet user.

A 2006 study of 405 young Chinese students found that the internet is a major player in the day-to-day interactions of participants, who on average spent one to three hours online per day (Chan, 2007). Today and 7 years later, this statistic appears as an understatement as the advancement of internet technology and speed has converted more users and extended average use times. In modern societies, we see magazines, books, journals, advertisements, and all sort of previously paper-based material being exchanged over the internet. In addition, search engines and databases have created an unprecedented environment for finding and tracking information. The question is, with all its potency and expansive nature, is the Internet too good for our own good? To answer this, we have conducted a literature review of the subject to weight the advantages against the disadvantages and formed a proposal to overcome the issues involved.

Background of the Study

The Internet is a worldwide network of computers that is comprised of general standards of interfaces and communication in order to support numerous interesting applications.

The internet application among utilized the most is the World Wide Web. It has revolutionized the world. It seems to be a simple and an easy-to-use interface to a compound network of data and computers. Internet is the basis of continuous progression in technology. This fact cannot be denied that the concept of internet is responsible for bringing technological enhancement globally.

The benefits of the internet explosion are wide and plentiful. With access to the web, knowledge sharing is simple and fast (mainly due to ease of access and efficient search engines). There is increased awareness of world issues including social political networks across the oceans. Scientists and researchers are using the Web to share ideas, which has helped with the growth and progression of scientific and technological discoveries. The Web aids the development of international collaborations, which allow for the collective use of knowledge and expertise from people across the world. More and more, people can work from the comfort of their homes and still manage to stay connected with group and company goals (Brockman, 2011).

The Internet significantly speeds up logistical processes by allowing forms and legal documents to be exchanged over the web rather than mailed or faxed from place to ...
