The impact of American culture on Asian fashion

Abstract

American culture has had a strong influence on Asian fashion trends over a period of time. It is quite evident that the trends in Asia, particularly East Asia, have been heavily influenced by American culture, and it has been seen in many cases that there is a growing inclination, amongst the younger population to follow American fashion trends, in addition to being influenced by the impact of the cultural invasion of the global superpower in all fields, whether it be television, movies, or the latest trends in fashion. Moreover, it is important to note that the rich and diverse nature of Asian culture and tradition is being knowingly or unknowingly being overrun by this “wave” of cultural invasion from the western society. When one analyzes the positive effects of globalization, it is pertinent to also analyze the adverse effects it has had, particularly on Asian culture and tradition, which has been known for its richness and diversity for centuries. Additionally, it is a worrying sign for Asian cultures that this “wave of Americanism” has engulfed particularly the youth of this great continent, known for its hospitality, diversity and cultural richness. Therefore, this research is aimed at studying this growing trend by shedding light on existing literature, with special emphasis on Japan and China, countries which have felt the effect of American cultural invasion more than other Asian nations, in addition to throwing light on related topics such as globalization and cultural imperialism which will help in understanding the research in a holistic manner.
