Discussion

Characters: Skeeter: In this movie, Skeeter is a bright and enthusiastic southern society girl who has just finished her college. She is determined to become a writer. Skeeter had concerns for the black women in Mississipi town, who have been working for some prominent southern families throughout their lives. Skeeter, as her initial writing project in a newspaper, started conversations with Aibileen for her column on housecleaning. Skeeter conceives her own writing project, regarding the lives of Jackson's maids, after the sudden loss of her maid who raised her since childhood. Moreover, she was depressed by the attitude of her friends towards their maids. Elizabeth and local socialite Hilly Holbrook treated their maids with racial discrimination.

Aibileen was a housekeeper of Skeeter's best friend, Elizabeth Leefolt. She was a maid just like her mother and grandmother. She had raised 17 white children. This character is shown to be impassive and with a silent protest in her eyes. Aibileen is projected to finally feel her thoughts and to challenge the conventional racial discrimination, as in 1960s (http://www.imdb.com).

Hilly Holbrook is the most dastardly villain in the movie. She appears to be respectable and is the president of Jackson Junior League. She is involved in all sorts of charities, including gathering canned food for the starving people of Africa.

Minny is a maid like Aibileen who has been working for the white families since long. Minny's character persuades other maids, in the town, to assist Skeeter in successfully completing her writing project.
