Abstract

The present research paper focuses on the prevalence of American Dream during the 1920's and its present condition. American Dream is an important aspect of the American culture. Everyone in America whether he is an American citizen or an immigrant strives for achieving that goal. The paper has highlighted the different aspects of the novel “The Great Gatsby” and how different characters in the novel had expressed the idea of an American Dream.

Introduction

American Dream has played a great role in the novel “The Great Gatsby”. It is a dream in America which says that every man and women have the right to live their life free of slavery. They should have their own small house, a good job, good education, and everything which is essential for living a better life. They should have the complete opportunity for achievements. Everyone should get according to his potentials and capabilities regardless of his birth and status. Everyone in America can lead a happy life through his own hard work; but there is so much inequality in US that it is not possible for everyone to attain that goal of “American Dream”(Library of Congress).

The Great Gatsby, a novel, written by American author, F. Scott Fitzgerald in 1925. Fitzgerald had not presented only the typical form of American dream but he has given a reflection of his own thoughts in the novel. He had a great affection for his friends and he thought “everyone can repeat his past”. He believed that every individual has got some limited amount of emotional capital and when an individual consumes all the capital, he will become bankrupt (Schudson, 2004). He communicated that sometimes it happened that an Individual is so much vulnerable that he cannot even mourn on his own inabilities.

He has presented some idea of American dream in his novel but he was unable to clearly communicate the ideas of American dream in the novel. The American dream, is an ideal thought which every citizen of USA wants to have in his life. Gatsby, the central character of the novel, has convert this dream into reality. He belonged to a poor family and was striving for a living which can provide him all the luxuries of life. He also wanted to fulfill this dream because he loved Daisy. Gatsby dreamed was that material ownership of the resources' is the substitute to happiness, beauty and harmony. He believed that through money one can get anything from this world, wealth is the only way to get happiness.
