“The Glass Menagerie” by Tennessee Williams

Introduction

The main aim of the essay is to analyze an element of the play The Glass Menagerie and discuss about that analysis. In this essay we will seek the main plot of the play and will analyze each character's escape mechanism. The play utilizes the concept of symbolism, in which each character is escaping from reality. The following sections are based on this discussion and escape from reality along with discussing it from the play's point of view.

Body

In this play, four characters locked in a miserable and suffocating floor, are showing their fragility, fears and frustrations. This story is about a family made up of a mother (Amanda) who is very attached to their past lives and boasting of this, a daughter (Laura), who is crippled and has a great complex for this, and a brother (Tom) , who is a poet and works in a shoe store, but do not feel at ease. It does so in order to support his family. In turn, Tom is the narrator of the story. The play consists of four characters:

Amanda Wing field - Mother

Laura Wing field - Her Daughter

Tom Wing field - Her Son

Jim O'Connor - Visitor

The conflict of the story begins when Amanda realizes that Laura has left her typing classes, Laura explains that one of these classes became very nervous and broke down because they watched. Amanda states that it is time to get nervous; Laura should get quickly to secure their future suitor. But Laura is not in the least interested in their future, they spend many hours fixing their small and fragile collection of glass animals to which she calls her Glass Menagerie and listen to old records that belonged to his father.

Amanda does not get along very well with their children. Fights with Tom, he spends much of his time in the film and that his mother does not like. In addition to Tom does not like working in a shoe. Laura also gets much discussion because of her shyness. Because Laura does not bring home suitors Amanda asks Tom if he can bring a co-worker to meet his sister and he accepts. Amanda manages the house to meet the partner of Tom (Jim) properly; Laura cannot go to dinner as it is very broken because of nerves (Bloom, p. 76-109).
