This story is about a family made up of a mother (Amanda) who is very attached to their past lives and boasting of this, a daughter (Laura), who is crippled and has a great complex for this, and a brother (Tom), who is a poet and works in a shoe store, but do not feel at ease. It does so in order to support his family. In turn Tom is the narrator of the story (Berkowitz 150-53).
