ABSTRACT

Aviation is one of the major UK industry, carrying 235 million passengers annually and over 2,3 million tons of cargo. Demand for air travel will grow in the medium and long term. DfT has introduced a long-term framework that balances the provision of social and economic benefits of aviation, taking into account the need to reduce and mitigate the environmental impact of air transport and airport development . In commercial aviation, these design assumptions clearly stated that both the crew and equipment are certified for specific operations, as indicated in the management of aircraft flight. Despite the defined context of the user, intended for real-and often different contexts so that the adaptation of work procedures and technologies are necessary and even inevitable in order to meet local constraints and requirements that the rules in real conditions of normal use. Previous studies have shown that the technology often leads to qualitative changes in the workplace, such as a way to practice to work and organizational change. Special instance of the new technology automating tasks previously performed by humans. Automation tends to make adjustments in the system by changing the very task it was designed to replace, thus forcing people into the system to take on new roles. But it's not only the role of such changes; practitioners to adapt the technology to fit their specific needs. Predicting human performance by allocating functions to either man or machine agents in the system on a fixed pattern, thus not useful for developing the system. Industrial practice is the most studied in the context in which work is done .. Adaptation of work procedures was observed spontaneously in the early phase, despite a highly regulated work environment in the cockpit. Adaptation system took different forms, depending on the introduced technology. Common observation in all these studies was that practitioners were trying to reduce complexity in their work environment (1) minimize the options available and / or (2) increase the predictability of the result by upgrading all the agents for a common understanding of the situation. In some cases, these policies were supported by the revision of standard operating procedures for its own benefit the human perception of strong, such as pattern matching for monitoring. Technology redesign was observed from RNAV to facilitate a pilot monitoring system performance. Adaptive strategies to reduce the cognitive load on the visualization of management constraints gave better than expected performance from HUD and RNAV approaches. In no case was a new automation added to the system without ...
