The Football Scandal

Introduction

An American football former coach of Pennsylvania State University, Jerry Sandusky, was convicted recently of abusing ten boys over a period of 15 years. The case sparked outrage in the U.S. and soiled the reputation of the university. Founded in 1855, Penn State ranks among the top fifteen public universities in the country.

Sandusky was charged with sexually assaulting at least ten children, including his adopted son, between 1994 and 2008. He faces a sentence of 156 years of accumulated prison. This scandal attained a huge attention all over as the former coach managed to involve in criminal activities for so long without being caught.

Background

The Pennsylvania State University, popularly known as Penn State, was fined $ 60 million and lost all football titles the last fourteen years for child abuse of one of its coaches, said the regulator of college sports NCAA.

Jerry Sandusky, assistant to the legendary Penn State coach Joe Paterno, who died in January, was convicted in June of sexually abusing at least ten children for fifteen years, something that is worth a national soccer program for youth housed the university.

The fine and withdrawal of degrees earned between 1998 and 2011 are a blow to the Penn State sports history and the legacy of Paterno, whose memory is tarnished by having allowed the abuse of Sandusky.

An internal university report released last week concluded that Paterno and other Penn State responsible for Sandusky did not report despite having evidence of what was happening.

In a public report, Paterno has been accused of ignoring and hiding Sandusky deviant behavior of abusing at least eight adolescents between 1994 and 2009. Dismissal as a result of the scandal and stress by popular opinion were too much for Paterno, while apparently moved his lung cancer and passed away on January 22. Meanwhile Sandusky, 68, was convicted of 45 counts of sexual offense and received a minimum sentence of 60 years.

The sanctions are likely to cripple a football program that grew into a regional powerhouse under his leadership. Because of the punishment, Paterno -- who once held the record for the most wins in Division I college football with 409 career victories -- saw his total drop to 298.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the main governing body of university sport, of great importance in the U.S., added to the sanctions four years in which Penn State will be out of the tournaments are played after the regular season, known as 'bowl'.
