CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
Business Research incubators Centres in Mauritius
In Mauritius, BRIC (Business Research incubators Centre) has been established with the collaboration of Research & technology and with the ministry of Tertiary education of Mauritius. It was launched by Hon Dr Rajeshwar Jeetah, Minister of Tertiary Education Science Research and Technology on March 2011. The main objective behind the formation of BRIC is to motivate business entrepreneurs to start-up new businesses. The entrepreneurs will get full backing and support in every matters of their business. The BRIC was established to boost and stabilize the economic growth of Mauritius. Nurodeli is one the example of a new business launched through the help and support of BRIC. The website was launched in March 2011 which provides yellow page directory and search engine facility to Mauritian (MRC, 2013). There are six pre start-up companies that are hosted by BRIC since its inception. The advantage is incubated by this research centre from meeting with possible project capitalists, customary in-house counselling, and experience to business angels through different forums organized by the centre. Business development experts of Mauritius Business Growth Scheme (MBGS) also guided these incubates and these efforts have proven to be very useful and critical for the success of these incubates (MRC 2013).
The development of entrepreneurship has followed a triumphant historical course in Mauritius. It was the end of 1970s when the potential of entrepreneurship development and its effective role in the development of economy was first realized in Mauritius. At that time, the employment rate was already above average and the state was going through economic recession. This turned out in a scenario where the jobs were not being created. Moreover, the adoption of Structural Adjustment Program in 1979 resulted in a long halt in the creation of direct jobs. Thus, it was realized that productive employment can be created by channeling the distinct national resources towards small organizations (Bruce, Deskins, Hill, & Rork 2009).
Formation of new business ventures and innovation in currently operating SMEs is the decisive element of innovation process and this is the reason that it should be given prime importance in government strategies for promoting innovation. In spite of their significance, support for entrepreneurs and SMEs is not completely entrenched in the innovation policy.
