The Ericksonian Principles

Introduction

Neuro Linguistic Programming

Neuro Linguistic Programming is a different path of personal development, psychotherapy and communication which was introduced in around the 1970's. It focuses on the relationship of the behavioral patterns and the neurological processes learnt through experience and how they can be used to achieve specific goals in life. It was put forward by Richard Bandler and John Grinder to address such psychological problems like depression, habit disorders, phobias, learning disorders and psychosomatic illnesses. Through Bradler and Grinder (1979), a person in the eyes of the NLP is a whole mind-body system and he has connections that go about his internal experience i.e. to say neuro, behavior (programming) and language (linguistic) (Tosey, Mathaison and Michelli, 2005). A lot of the work Grinder and Brandler (179) did was developed after being identified as be basing on the works of other renowned linguistic experts, that is when 'neuro-lingustic' terminology was coined (Yemm, 2006). Milton Erickson was one of the great earlier contributors to this field of study as well.

Ericksonian Principles

Milton H. Erickson was a person who was largely self taught. Born of humble origins, a farmer's son, he expected nothing greater from life than the life of a farmer like his father. However, due to constant illnesses and chronic diseases, he became completely paralyzed. In order to heal himself, with the use of his exceptional determination, Milton created the concepts of self hypnosis, etc. The Ericksonian Principles, their effects and advantages shall be further discussed later on.

Thesis Statement

NLP (neuro-linguistic programming)

Richard Bandler and John Grinder created the concept of Neuro-Linguistic Programming in 1970's. Bandler was Gestalt therapist and a computer scientist, while Gandler was a therapist and a linguist. They invented the process known as modeling, which enabled them to study world's three greatest therapists: Dr Milton Erickson, father of modern hypnotherapy, Virginia Satir, the mother of modern-day family therapy and fritz perls, Gestalt therapy creator. They wanted people to learn from the teachings of these therapist. People can learn to be effective from the teachings of these therapists and adopt their methods.tThe Neuro-Linguistic Programming is the product of this modeling process.
