ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to analyse the factor i.e. the effective project management skills that influence the successful Information Technology projects in ADGAS. This survey also examines the views of IT Managers, Business Managers, Team Members of the IT projects and the Users of IT Systems. The dissertation begins with a brief introduction of the ADGAS company followed by a short introduction of the IT Division. Secondly the PMBOK methodology will be discussed. Based on the survey results the problems and issues will be identified in IT project management. In the IT projects of ADGAS, the initiation phase is relevant only when a business sponsor identifies a need or an opportunity. The business sponsor creates a concept document with the proposal of new project or information system and finalizes the document. A project manager is appointed during this phase. In the IT projects of ADGAS one of the key stakeholders accepts the responsibility of being the project manager. In the IT projects of ADGAS the budget for the project is approved by the sponsors based on the scope of the project and on the cost benefit analysis. The planning phase starts after the systems concept development phase. The planning phase is used to identify and document how the business will operate once the new IT system is available. The requirement analysis phase is used to gather functional requirements and formally define the functional requirements in terms of data, performance, security, and maintainability. The implementation phase involves installing the systems and making them operationally available in a production environment. The changeover from the legacy system to the new information system needs to be properly planned and implemented by a project manager. Some projects fail despite execution as planned, on time, and within budget because they did not produce actual benefits to the customer, achieve intended outcomes, or result in the expected profit. On the other hand, there have also been cases of a troubled project with issues, delays, and overruns that were considered successful. The statistical analysis depicted that the stakeholder, users, and executive management of ADGAS are involved in the IT project. Requirements of the projects to its team members are clear by the IT department, which may results towards the success of projects. This company has competent project management team as well as adequate resources for its IT projects. The project managers and project team members keep check on various things and open to feedback. Its IT division consider initiation, planning and design, execution, monitoring and controlling and closing before starting any project.
