Abstract

The concept of pain management pertains to a field of medicine which employs a disciplinary approach for enhancing the quality of living and easing the sufferings of those people who are in pain. This research is conducted with the aim to study the effects of the training of self regulation to the patients in pain management and assessing their observance and implementation of this training and technique. The proposed research method to be applied in this study will the secondary research involving the undertaking of study on a qualitative basis. With the help of analysis and discussion, a conclusion will established based on the qualitative method of study and evaluation. This will form grounds for the further studies and researches to be carried out with authenticity.

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

The study at hand deals with the subject of the effects of self-regulation training in pain management and adherence to treatment. It observes the concept of pain management, the self-regulation training and its adherence in the pain management techniques.

Background of the Study

The concept of pain management pertains to a field of medicine which employs a disciplinary approach for enhancing the quality of living and easing the sufferings of those people who are in pain. The particular team of pain management includes the occupational therapists, medical practitioners, physiotherapists, nurse practitioners and clinical psychologists. Pain is known to be pervasive, severe, and under treated in hospital settings (Williams, Nicholas, et al., 1999, pp. 57). It is the most frequent symptom identified by patients in acute care, affecting several inpatient populations, including populations in surgery, oncology, and critical care. Pain has been implicated in higher health care costs and in deleterious physiological and psychosocial outcomes (Watson, Booker, et al.,, 2004, pp. 359).

Moreover, the mismanagement of pain is considered to be ethically inhumane. The management of pain is affected by organizational processes as well as individual characteristics of the nurse. In order to treat the pain in the patients, the doctors and clinicians mostly suggest the self regulation techniques which are aimed upon giving them proper treatments (Pincus, Burton, Vogel, et al., 2001, pp. 109).
