Abstract

In this study we try to explore the concept of “The effect of a cognitive skill training program” in a holistic context. The main focus of the research is on “The effect of a cognitive skill training program” and its relation with “cognitive growth”. The research also analyzes many aspects of “cognitive skill training program” and tries to gauge its effect on “cognitive growth, mathematical and reading performance levels of children with grades 1-3”.

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

Background of the research

Cognitive skills are the vital human functions which allow us to learn. Skills like attention, memory, logic and reasoning, auditory and visual abilities are known as cognitive skills. Cognitive skills are the fundamental intellectual abilities which are essential to process, analyze and retain information. (Bell & Wexler 2001)

Cognitive skill training is concerned with strengthening cognitive insufficiencies in order to improve the overall learning ability. As the awareness of the effects of weak cognitive skills on academic results increases, a range of cognitive skills training programs have emerged. (Beattie & Owen 1985).

Problem Statement

Problem statement is to find out the effects of a cognitive skill training program on the cognitive growth, mathematical and reading performance levels of children with grades 1-3.

Aims and Objectives

This research can contribute a powerful social change in the field of special education, adding to the intervention strategies of the cognitive skill training approach. If a causal relationship is found and a significant improvement is experienced, then special educators will feel confident using cognitive skill therapy to remediate children with SLD instead of relying exclusively on curricular modifications and adaptations used traditionally in special education.

Significance

This research may help other future researches in focusing on effectiveness of cognitive skill therapy as early intervention or prevention for helpless children. Also other researches can focus on effectiveness of cognitive skill ...
