The Economic Impact of Obesity on the American Health Care System

Abstract

Obesity has fully fledged developed into a chief worldwide epidemic concern, over the past several decades. More than 2/3 of the individual are overweight and 1/3 is obese. In this piece of writing, we have given a general idea of the American health care system and the economic impact of obesity. The economy impacts is divided into four categories, transportation costs, direct medical costs, human capital costs and productivity costs. We reassess present facts on every set of costs, & recognize vital breaks for further research and possible tendencies in future economic impacts of obesity.

The Economic Impact of Obesity on the American Health Care System

Introduction

Health care is the treatment, analysis, and hindrance of diseases, poor health, any injury, and other bodily and psychological impairments in an individual. Health care is provided by medical doctors, chiropractic, dentists, nurses, allied health, pharmacy, and other care provider. In public health sectors, it is the work done in providing primary, secondary, tertiary care. Health care is either owned by private or public sectors. In the American health care system the obesity is considered to be a major global epidemic. It is a serious health care concern having a sizeable economic load on the system of American health care. In this study we carried out a broad search of the literature to address the obesity related cost in economics. The economic obesity exerts a tremendous cost on obese people leading to serious health care issues such as psychological suffering and disability. The economic cost of obesity is much burdened calling for imperative preventive actions from government, business, health insurer, and stakeholders. Obesity puts an essential external cost on the community through health care expenditure and disability payments pooled through public programs and group health insurance. The major contributors of obesity include economic factors, environmental factors, psychological factors, genetics and social factors. Changes in daily life are considered by many scholars to play an important task in global increases in the number of persons who are overweight and obese. The major factors identified are (1) changes in diet toward foods away from traditional plant-based foods that are high in fibre and micronutrients (such as vitamins and minerals) toward processed foods and animal products that are elevated in calories, often from sugar and fat; and (2) decreased physical activity due to the changing demands of the workplace, increasing urbanization, and a shift to motorized rather than human-powered transportation (e.g., driving a car or riding a bus rather than walking or riding a bicycle).
