Between 1761 and 1812, Americans struggled with three major foreign policy problems. First, and most persistent, was defining their association with France and Great Britain as those two countries fought for world domination. Subsequently, US was dealt with a deteriorating Spanish supremacy on the southern and, for a short time, western border. And third, once the United States became independent, it suffered periodic depredations from the Barbary States of North Africa on its Atlantic and Mediterranean shipping.
