The Decembrists

Introduction

The Decembrists' uprising occurred on 14 December 1825 in Royal Russia. It was the time when Russian army protested against Nicholas I assumption to obtain throne after removal of his brother from progression named as Constantine. Since all of these incidents took place in December so the whole chain of sequence was named after the month by the name of Decembrists. This revolt occurred at the Senate Square in Saint Petersburg. This square was called Decembrist Square from 1925 in memory of this incident but it was renamed to its original name in 2008 (Orlando. F., 2002).

Discussion

The society named as The union of Salvation was formed by some officers of the Imperial Russian Guards in 1816. The society was consist of liberal casts since the time the great Pavel Pestel joined it. The society suspended its activity in 1821 after the rebellion in Semenovsky Regiment in 1820. But two groups were clandestinely functioning named as Southern society led by Pestel and a Nothern Society led by Guard Officers. Northern society had British style constitutional political aims and Southern Society wanted to establish and redistribute land and bring it under ownership of state and distribute the rest among farmers. Majority of Officers were influenced by Tsar Alexander's liberal formation of Russian Society and Politics. Speransky was hired as a Governor in 1819 to reform Local Government in Siberia. Novosiltsev was asked by Tisar to redraw constitution in 1818. These series of political liberalization led to formation of conservative government and restrictions. As a result of realizations by peasant soldiers of cruel disgraces, Decembrists represented their disapproval by refusing court lifestyle and used to wear their swords at ballroom dances and joining academic institutes.
