Campbell continued preaching and was still supported by many in his congregations (James, pp. 87). At these meetings he began to notice that there was much frustration over the division and indicisuality among the congregations (James, pp. 87).

Partyism is a foul blot on Christianity, and among the blackest stains on the character of its professors. An apostle calls such "carnal." Partyism is directly opposed to the plan of heaven, which is to gather into one, or unite all, in Christ Jesus. It is contrary to the express command of God--to the doctrine, example and prayer of Jesus--to the repeated exhortations of his inspired apostles--and to the very spirit of Christ in all his new born children; for they are born with heavenly love and union, with the whole family of Christ” (Rhodes, pp. 23-25).

Thomas Campbell was one of the major characters associated with the Restoration Movement (Rhodes, pp. 23-25).

He decided to put a simple phrase into practice, “Where scriptures speak, we speak; where the scriptures are silent, we are silent”. This motto was accepted and ultimately led to the writing of The Declaration and Address (James, pp. 88).

In the US Thomas moved to western Pennsylvania and began working as a frontier minister, where he ran into several difficulties (James, pp. 84).

The frontier had many denominations, but few ministers. The practice of closed communion meant that there would be very few opportunities for believers to practice this sacrament (James, pp. 84).

Thomas began practicing open communion in an attempt to serve the people of the frontier and was quickly brought under disciplinary action (James, pp. 84).
