Introduction

The book of psalms in Hebrew language is called “tehillim” means to praise. In Greek it means “a song sung with a compliment of a musical instrument”. It consists of 150 songs highlighting the greatness of God. It refers mostly to the King David who is said to have drawn other sources and incorporated with them for unique and inspiring verses. It is a collection of prayers, poems and hymns focusing on God's admiration and respect (Phillips, 2001).

Psalms are specifically written or singing because they contain lyrics. They are written over a period of one thousand years. They reflect human feelings of a particular time. Psalms were a part of life of Israelites. All psalms were originally written for different purposes. But the main idea discussed is to lead the life in worshipping God. Psalms focuses on communicating and reaching out for God.

Purpose of recitation

Book of Psalms is read for the purposes of thanksgiving or for requesting help. Many psalms consist the beginning of despair or cry and end with hope, providing comfort and spiritual fulfillment to the readers who recite these verses in their prayers. Book of Psalms is recited by many because it describes the situations applicable today and which continue to inspire and help the readers. The series of events in Psalms encompasses human experience, past and present. The situations underline the nature of our relationship with God. The central idea defines God within our lives and the importance of communication for one's needs, faith, appreciation and pain.
