Part One: Effective Lesson Design and Backwards Design

A lesson plan is the architectural layout of an instructor which outlines the learning objectives needing to be fulfilled for a student in a set time. In order to design a plan that is effective and creating positive results certain criteria needs to be assessed. It is very important to include the following eight elements in order to come up with an effective and strong lesson design. The eight elements include objectives and goals, preventative set, guided practice, direct instruction, closure, required equipment and materials, independent practice, assessment, and follow-up.

Objectives and Goals

The first step is to identify the subject that will be taught to the students. For example, if English is being selected, the instructor needs to be able to decide between reading, writing, speaking, or listening as the starting point. Through this area, the instructor must make the student developed the knowledge to read, write, speak or listen in the English language. The initial learning would be simple and easy to comprehend for the student's to follow. It should become challenging over a period of time to bring the skills out of the student stronger. Eventually, it will cause the student to be self independent and able to pick up the skills from the learning experience in him or her. The objectives of the lessons ought to be clearly explained and in lined with the Core State Standards (Milkova 2012).

Preventative Set

Prior that you examine the instructions of the lesson, make the stage ready for your students by getting into their previous knowledge and providing the objectives a context. It is important for the instructor to be aware of the what, when, where, who, and why of the student's past experience. Cultural background should not be a problem since there is a standard being followed. However, the instructor should be aware if someone is having higher difficulty in the subject as compared to his fellow classmates. In this case, the instructor needs to decide if the student requires more assistance, better understanding, or needs to be in another class (English as a second language or English as a foreign language). The more thorough the instructor is prepared and aware of the skills, the better the learning (Newman 2013).

Guided Practice

With guidance, the students are provided an opportunity to practice and apply the expertise you taught them by means of direct instruction. In this criterion, it is important to understand the application of concepts and to develop the key skills of problem solving and comprehension. In the English Language example, students would be given exercises to match words that rhyme or given scenarios where students can have completion of sentences. Being a role model, the instructor can lead by example to illustrate to students the methodology to solve problems (Newman 2013).
