The Benefits of Respite care
Introduction
Respite care can be best defined as a temporary institutional care on short term basis which may range from a few hours to few weeks. This care is basically for the sick, disabled or handicapped person and helps in providing relief or respite to the usual caregiver. The usual caregiver may be a family member, a close relative or a family friend and the person receiving care may be a child, adult or elderly (Anonymous, n.d.).
This temporary or short term care maybe on voluntary basis or paid. Although it might be paid for in some circumstances, but at the end of the day it is relatively cheaper as it prevents the placement of individuals in a permanent facility outside their homes. In some parts of the world the term “short breaks” are also referred as respite care.
Respite care is a concept which is usually practiced in developed parts of the world. In third world or developing countries or in countries where certain religions are dominant, their own customs and practices prevail and respite care might not be very frequently heard of.
As with everything, respite care has its own pros and cons. What is interesting to see is how and to what extent its benefits outweigh its downsides. Its advantages and disadvantages are best illustrated not only qualitatively but also by quantitative means, so that it wins a valid and legitimate argument.

Basic Elements of respite care
Respite care is paid by?
The Department of human services may reimburse for the respite care provided. Such a requisition must be filed by the Provider engaged by the family. A family can receive a maximum of $950 per annum if it meets the eligibility criteria for respite care. One family member can receive up to a maximum of $550 per annum while an additional $200 would be given to every additional member of family.
Services-Respite care
If the patient in need of respite care is on hospice, Medicare will help with the cost. This includes medical supplies and medical care. The care paid by Medicaid is same for respite care and includes prescriptions.
