The novel The Awakening takes place in the late 19th years throughout the Industrial Revolution and the Women's privileges Movement. The entire cornerstone of the article is round the feminist movement and it quite vital to the plot. The novel opens on Grand Isle, which was a popular summer vacation spot for the wealthy citizens of New Orleans(Bardot, 1989).

The story undoes as Edna Pontellier is vacationing with her married man, Leonce, and their children at the cabins of Madame Lebrum. Leonce is certainly away, due to enterprise, and is continuously preoccupied with work. This directs to Edna expending most of her time with her friend, Adele Ratignolle, whose friendship begun the awakening process in Edna. This is the narrative hook, opening the entire basis of the book to that of Edna's self-discovery(Ballenger, 1992).

The increasing action comprises of many events that commenced her awakening while Edna vacationed in impressive Isle. There, conversations with Adele provoked Edna to recognize the oppression initiated up on her by her husband. Robert Lebrun's flirtations initiated her to yearn much more freedom from her husband, and Edna swam for the first time in the ocean, displaying her personal power and courage to begin a new chapter in her life, one of self-discovery and fulfillment.

When reading The Awakening, I discovered no factual climax, but rather Edna's whole series of realizations of her entrapment in society. These realizations lead her to eventually leave her married man in search of certain thing more. The main point of the falling action is that of Edna's death at the end of the novel, unhappy with what she was granted in life, Edna commits suicide by drowning in the sea(Asbee, 2001).

The main conflict in the novel is that detail that one time Edna starts to glimpse the mistakes in humanity and craves self-reliance, she finds herself dejected and in udder solitude. When Edna sees herself as a separate and characteristic individual, her world is turned completely upside-down. Edna no longer likes to submit herself to the likes of her married man and has discovered her own mindset that she likes to fulfill. The need for self-fulfillment determinants her to depart her husband, which was not acceptable during the time the innovative takes location, to be with her admirer that refuses her, due to society's thoughts on divorce.

Each of the chapters plays on the preceding and leads to the next in a chronological order, beginning with the realization of her mundane way of life and each section showing a new sense of rebirth.

The entire novel hubs on Edna Pontellier's urgent situation of realization of what life is lacking. Edna is an attractive young woman who is marvelous at art, and strives for a career as an artist - her only means of self-expression.
