The Aeneid

Introduction

The Aeneid was an epic poem written by the Roman poet Virgil in the late first century BC (29 BC to 19 BC). The work recounts the mythical adventures of Aeneas, a Trojan who travelled with a few companions in Italy after the fall of Troy and there were the ancestor of the Romans. The poem is written in hexameter verse and divided into 12 books. The first 6 books recount the wanderings of Aeneas from Troy to his arrival in Italy, while the second half of the project recounts the war between the Trojans and the Latins (Fowler, p. 1605).

Discussion

Virgil brought together disparate stories and legends about his adventures, the murky connection to the founders of Rome, the arming of piety, and created there by a founding myth, a national epic for Rome. The main hero Aeneas was already known in Roman mythology as the face of the Iliad. The epic, it has identified as the most important ever written in Latin, linking Rome with Troy and its legends, while glorifying the 'traditional' Roman virtues and "legitimizes" the Julian dynasty as originating from the founders, heroes and gods of Rome and Troy.

This poem reflects the fact that Aeneid is in control. The poem was written under the reign of Augustus, to celebrate the peace of the Empire, but in reality is more than praise the emperor.
