The Glass Menagerie

As The Glass Menagerie is a comedy of memories. It can represent a remarkable freedom from all conventionality. This story is about a family having a mother (Amanda) who is much attached to their past and live flaunting it, one daughter (Laura), who is crippled and has a huge complex about it, and a brother (Tom), who is a poet and works in a shoe store. Tom does not like his work; yet, he does it to support his family. At the same time, Tom is the narrator of the story. Sometimes a parent mentions never appears as he has abandoned his family.

The conflict of the story begins when Amanda realizes that Laura has left her classes in typing, Laura explains that these classes became very nervous and broke down because they watched. Amanda states that it is time to get nervous; Laura should get fast to secure her future suitor. But Laura is not in the least interest about their future (Warren, 2003).

In the play, Written by Tennessee Williams, the three types of themes have been discussed. First one is realism. Every member of Wingfield family is involved in his/her fantasy world and could not be able to face practical life. Laura is her own private world which revolves around glass animals like Unicorn. On the other hand, her brother Tom is the only one who is capable to perform in real world as he is having a job, taking care of his family and having friends.
