Information comes from internal and external sources. Internal information includes data from transaction processing. External information includes market research, intelligence gathering about the activities of competitors, information about social trends, economic factors, government legislation, and so on. This information can be obtained by "interpersonal networking", the media or by industrial espionage. In some large organisations, a whole department can exist to gather external information. An important feature of the MIS will be to put this information into a form that is useable by the managers. The traditional information flow in an organisation is through notice boards, newsletters and memos. Technological systems include Email, Intranets, collaboration software e.g. Lotus Notes and computer databases. (Bradford and Duncan, 65-78)

The system must allow users to browse the contents of the database as grouped clusters of related records. The clustering will be achieved by the application of one or more classification marks, based on an adapted subset of the Dewey Decimal System, to each resource description. The review records must automatically include the time, date and IP address of originator. The system must allow Tesco personnel to configure the display of search results to include the aggregated results from the quantitative parts of accepted reviews. The ability for the system to optionally parse natural language queries is desirable. The ability for the system to perform proximity searching (searches that allow the user to specify that multiple terms should appear within a configurable number of words from each other within the text of a record) is desirable. (Bradford and Duncan, 65-78)
End user requirements
The end users for the service of Tesco need to be able to submit search expressions of varying complexity, with a number of options, via a number of user-friendly forms interfaces. The information system for Tesco must support full Boolean logic, and provide the ability for the user to optionally select (from a subset that can be configured by the Project Team) which parts of the records in the database are searched.
The information system must allow end-users to select the format of the returned results from a short list of available options, which will be determined and configured by the Project Team. The system must offer the user the option of automatically expanding the search term(s) with synonyms from one or more ISO-standard hierarchical thesauri, which the system will be required to store. Users of the system should be able to select whether the system expands their search expression with equivalent terms, narrower terms, broader terms, or any combination of the three. The system should allow the users the option to browse the thesauri via a software interface. (Bradford and Duncan, 65-78)
