Summary

Drug abuse is a severe problem faced by various countries. Drug addiction has negative impacts on society as well as on the life of an individual. It may harm unborn babies due to drug addicted parents and may also destroy the entire family. It is commonly assumed that drug abusers do not quit drug in take because of less will power. In reality, drug addiction is a complicated disease and quitting takes more than a strong will or good intentions. Drugs change the brain in ways that foster compulsive abuse, giving up is difficult, even for those people who really want to quit it (Sussman & Susan, 2013).

Within an individual's community, social interactions give rise to these kinds of psychosocial processes. Interaction with other society members can be enhanced by promoting trust and reciprocity that offers secure factors opposing the initiation of any psychosocial practices that are considered as determinants of ill-health. In communities with higher social capital, members have some sense of public responsibility for each other, even if they have no associations with each other. This sense of trust helps is developing the children in an effective and progressive way beneficial for the society (McAurthur, 2010).

In current situation, drug abuse is considered as a critical health problem. Drug abuse and its dependencies are the main causes of different health, social and environmental issues. Drug abuse increases criminal activities, spread of HIV infection and various other diseases, deaths on and off the road, medical expense and troubles for local communities.

Health Condition Featured In the Case Study

In the context of medicine and nursing, it is observed that the main harm of drug is the prolonged personal risk but it further turns out to be a societal problem when the money means of fulfilling drug desire is involving in the criminal activity. This drug abuse negatively affects the society that can be observed by drug related accidents and crimes and with the rise of medical costs and health insurance. This paper is based on the research of a specific social problem that is caused by drug abuse (World Health Organization, 2012).

The Current Prevalence of the Condition in Australia

On the basis of surveys and researches conducted, it has been observed that 38% of Australians of 14 years age have used drug at least once in their life time and 15% are those who have used drug once in a year. The most commonly used drug in Australia is Marijuana/cannabis which is used by 34 % of the Australians once in their life time 11% of the population having used it in the previous 12 months (Gorden, Talak, and Troncale, 2004).
