Terrorism and Organized Crime: Similarities and Differences
Abstract
The organized use of terror, often vicious, specifically as a mean of cruelty is commonly refers as terrorism. The word terrorism has been derived from a French word “terrorisme” and inventively referred particularly to state terrorism which was practiced by the French government during the Reign of Terror. Though, the term terrorism has no legal binding or any distinct criminal law definition. Usually common classifications of terrorism pass on only to those violent acts which are anticipated solitary to produce violence. Such violent acts knowingly target the comfort and safety of non combats which are the common men of any state or territory i.e. civilians, and are committed for a political, ideological or a religious objective they want to achieve. In a tactical way such actions are being referred as an unlawful act of violence or war. Moreover, when the same tactics are used by any criminal organization for their targeted purposes and for protection uproar, or in order to put into effect the code of silence is often not labeled as terrorism. Although, such actions would eventually be labeled as terrorism when they done by a politically inspired group. However, the expression terrorism is a term which is considered as emotionally and politically charged. One can take it as a precise distinction of word terrorism. In an addition to it, studies and researchers have found almost more than a hundred of distinctions of terrorism. Terrorism has left many countries in a situation of awe, fear and terror. It's (terrorism) concept may be found frequently as a controversial one because of the fact that it has been used by the state authorities as well as by the individuals who have an access to the state support and authority in order to delegitimize the political or other challengers. Another factor behind the controversy of this concept is that it has been used in order to legitimize the state's own utilization of their arm force against the opponents, and such use of force can be defined as terror created by the antagonists of the state.
As far as an organized crime is concern, such crimes are explained as the criminal organizations often are a group of term which grouped national, transitional, or local groupings of vastly centralized enterprises run by the scandalous. Such criminal groups are basically engaged in producing illegal activities which are intended majorly for their monetary profits. So as terrorism, a criminal organization is also politically motivated. At times these criminal organizations pressurize individuals to do business with them as an example of this is when a gang shakes down money form the shopkeeper in order to their so called protection. A gang which is consist of organized set of criminals is usually describes as mob and these mobs gangs may become restraint enough to be considered organized.
