Introduction

The second half of the nineteenth century has seen some significant technological advances that have caused profound changes in the life styles of people around the world. Making a journey through the history of Educational Technology one can find that its conceptualization has undergone many changes over time, due to the evolution of our society (which goes through a time of rapid technological development) and the changes that have occurred in the science behind it. Therefore, among other changes that technology has brought in education, one can highlight: the evolution of conceptualization "from an instrumentalist approach, through a systemic approach to teaching which focuses on problem solving to a more focused approach (Johnson & Maddux, Pp. 59-76).

Answer to the question of how technology has taken over education can be found in the contemporary methods of education. These alternative methods are quite different from the traditional methods of education. The advent of Information Communication Technology (ICT) to education has opened to many doors and so the traditional scheme reproduce Professor teaching and student learning or play what the teacher has taught him is not enough. The new goal is to give students the skills and knowledge required to survive in the rapidly changing world.

These skills and knowledge serve the students in becoming familiar with Information Communication Technology, and the students then take advantage of these skills in learning (Seng & Choo, Pp. 99-116). As the popularity of the web grows, academic institutions strive to provide valuable education to prepare students to excel in this ever-changing industry.

Technology and its effects on children's minds

Children in today's world seem to be using technology in almost everything that they do. Children can be seen using computers for playing games, socializing with their friends on the internet, and in doing their school assignments. It's widely accepted that information technology and telecommunications are essential tools for business and industry. The U.S. Department of Education, National Center for Educational Statistics reports that as of 2001, the average public school contained 124 instructional computers. About 99% of schools reported having Internet access in 2001 and 55% reported connecting to the Internet through T1/DS1 lines. Instructional rooms with Internet access rose from 50% in 1998 to 85% in 2001. The report indicates that 66% of children use computers at home, with 45% using home computers for schoolwork. The rise in technology use, in schools, does not necessarily mean that schools are immune to the digital divide.
