Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to highlight the relationship between education and technology and examine the technology's role in the improvement of teaching and learning. The concept of education has evolved over the period of time and the means of teachings are touching new horizons with the advancement in information and communication technology. Today's learners do not learn books, visit places and spend hours and hours on gaining the bookish knowledge. They are making the best use of commercial mantra of cheaper, faster and smaller mobile devices and filling their minds with every piece of information that comes in their way.

Introduction

It has always been a topic of debate that what the relationship between education and technology is. It is believed undoubtedly that technology has brought a boost in every field of life and the world has become global village. This rapid technological driven change has its far reaching impacts on teaching and learning. The concept of education has evolved over the period of time and the means of teachings are touching new horizons with the advancement in information and communication technology. Today's learners do not learn books, visit places and spend hours and hours on gaining the bookish knowledge. They are making the best use of commercial mantra of cheaper, faster and smaller mobile devices and filling their minds with every piece of information that comes in their way (Koehler et al., 2006).

With this, teacher's role in this situation is not that of an instructor or dictator. Now, his role is switched towards guide or a facilitator who keeps checks on students if they are using their knowledge in right direction. However, the negative impact of technology on education cannot be undermined. There are a number of problems education is facing which are the outcome of technology. There is a need to redefine the role of teachers, parents and community in this era. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the relationship between education and technology and examine the technology's role in the improvement of teaching and learning.

New Technology

There are some fundamental tenets of education. Meaningful learning is not just accumulating knowledge. In this connection, knowledge and skills are interlinked. Learning is transference of ideas and then application of these ideas to a new situation. However, in the presence of technology, it has become a critical complement to educational system that is opening more learning opportunities than can be provided by other traditional ways. Technology can be an effective tool in learner's education and development. There are a number of organizations which are using technology for a wide range of activities (Rempel et al., 1998).

There has been a little research on relationship between education and technology. The available literature focuses on the characteristics of technology with its negative and positive impacts.
