Green Oak Construction

The oak which is freshly cut is termed as the Green Oak. Thus in the engineering, the Green Oak Construction is comprised of the art of the crafts of forming a building frame with the members of green oak. The use of green oak in the construction of houses and cottages is prevailing from the last many centuries; therefore it is not a new craft. The green oak is widely used across the globe for the construction of historic barns, houses and church roofs which can be seen up and down the land. Britain was once covered in ancient forests, but clearing land and the insatiable demand for wood for centuries exhausted many of our natural resources of timber. However, in effective forest management and conservation in modern times has saved many forests and also created new wooden stock we have in the future (Peter 2007, pp. 15).

British Oak is far from sustainable forests that are well managed and protected against exploitation. This means we can buy British oak managed sources without worrying about the negative effects on the forests themselves.

The Green Oak is widely used, but still there are some problems which are related to the properties of the material. Such are:

Hardness: It is found that even the green oak is very difficult to cut by using the power tools and shape them green.

Drying Time: It is observed that the green oak gets dry very slowly and the typical frames members, between 150mm and 200mm thick. Therefore, even drying the material in modern kilns would not help us to achieve the reduction in this time for oak of thickness.

One of the main benefits of using green oak is that it is widely available and can be more profitable than seasoned oak and dry oven. Green oak can be a good choice for wood beams and frames as a durable wood and has a long grain even straight. This makes is very strong and is ideal for the creation of support structures. Green Oak can also be used in its raw state with minimal industrial processing and this makes it a very cost effective and energy-efficient material to use in building houses. It is also a very beautiful wood aging successfully and can provide a rich depth of character at home. Oak beams are a classic addition to any property period and may be used in renovation projects and conversion of barn to create modern designs with traditional touches.

Types of Oak

There are two main types of oak in British forests. These are the common oak or English oak and sessile or Durmast oak is usually the main trunk branches unless the common oak, but tend to be straight. Both Robles produce strong and durable wood ideal for construction.
