Introduction

The nurses are the first line responders that are responsible for spending a high amount of time, in direct interaction with the patient. It is vital that these professionals should work in collaboration with each other, and the other health care professional, to achieve maximum patient related benefits and to develop their own professional efficiency. This has led to the fo9rmation of teams in the health care professionals. Depending on the type of professional included, these teams are divided into interdisciplinary and intra-disciplinary teams.

Interdisciplinary and Intra Disciplinary Teams

Intra-disciplinary team refers to the team of professionals all belonging to the same profession. An example given can be of a team of nurses. Interdisciplinary team, on the other hand, refers to the team of individuals with various health care professionals, belonging to numerous expertise. The example given for the interdisciplinary team is of a team that comprises of the nurses, physicians and other health care workers working in collaboration.

In order to provide better health care facilities to patients and to attain better efficacy and quality, the team working is highly promoted in the health care facilities. The nursing care is one dynamic example in this regard, in which the in the concept of interdisciplinary and intra-disciplinary team work is highly acknowledged. The formation of the type of team depends on the scenario and need. However, the interdisciplinary team work is highly advantageous in the health care facilities, where different health care professionals work in collaboration to provide the patient with adequate health care services.

Position of Patients in the Teams

The patients are the prime focus of the health care system. The innovations are made and implemented by keeping the process patient-centered. The position of the patient in the teamwork is critical. In the intra-disciplinary, the professionals work together to provide the patient the services that meet the specific goal of the team. In inter-disciplinary team, the patient is the centre of attention of the team member, each providing the patient with the services as designated to him, in terms of his professional expertise.

Communication skills in interdisciplinary teams

The communication skills hold key importance in determining the efficiency of the team. The lack of proper communication between the disciplines can lead to inappropriate distribution of knowledge regarding the patient's health condition and the therapy. This can lead to ineffective decision making and affect the overall process. The same is the case with the intra-disciplinary teams, where the communication between the professionals holds utmost importance.
